Paving, Grading & Gravel Driveways in Highlands, NC

Highlands sits above 4,000 feet on a plateau that gets some of the heaviest rainfall in the eastern United States, close to 90 inches a year. That combination of elevation, slope, water, and real winters is hard on driveways and private roads, and it rewards work that is built right the first time. Black Bear Paving has been paving and grading in these mountains for over 25 years, and our shop in Franklin is about 20 miles down the gorge on US-64.

We work for homeowners, builders, property managers, and association boards throughout Highlands and southern Macon County. Call (828) 349-3390 or request a free estimate.

Paving & Grading Services in Highlands

Building for the Highlands Plateau

Rain. With this much water, drainage is the job. Driveways and roads need a crown or cross-slope, ditches and culverts sized for a mountain downpour, and somewhere stable for the water to go. Most of the washed-out gravel and broken asphalt we see here started as a drainage problem.

Elevation and winter. Highlands sees more freeze-thaw cycles, more snow, and a shorter paving season than the valleys. Asphalt has to be placed while conditions allow proper compaction, so spring and fall dates matter, and we schedule plateau work with the weather in mind.

Slope and rock. Steep, narrow, wooded lots and shallow rock are the norm. Getting trucks and a paver in, and getting a driveway to a grade you can use in January, takes planning before the first load of stone.

Finish. These are fine homes, and the driveway is the first thing anyone sees. Clean edges, neat tie-ins at stonework and garages, and a tidy site when we leave are part of the job.

For Second-Home Owners & Property Managers

Many of our customers on the plateau are away for part of the year. You don't need to be on site for us to do the work. We can meet your caretaker or property manager, walk the job and send photos, provide a written estimate by email, and schedule the work while you're away so the driveway is finished and cured when you return. Late fall and early spring, outside the summer season, are ideal times for driveway and road work, and they book early.

For HOA & POA Boards

Many of the private roads around Highlands are decades old and due for attention. We assess association roads section by section, separate what needs rebuilding from what can be overlaid or patched, and price the work in phases a board can budget for. See private and association roads. We also offer winter plowing and ice control for association roads and steep drives.
