Get Your Driveway Ready for Winter

Clayton's average first freeze comes in late October, and it comes earlier in Sky Valley and on the mountains. Rabun doesn't get much snow in town, but it gets ice: the January 2026 storm put three-quarters of an inch of it on Clayton, and the county plows main roads first while GDOT doesn't clear local or subdivision roads at all. Fall is when to get ahead of it.

A new driveway that ties into a county road needs a road cut permit from the Rabun County Road Department. One that ties into a state route such as US-441, US-76, or GA-197 needs a driveway permit from GDOT. Land disturbance near water is regulated too: Georgia requires a 25-foot undisturbed buffer on streams and 50 feet on trout streams, and most of the streams in Rabun County are trout water. Yes. Steep driveways are most of what we do. They need a solid compacted base, drainage that gets water off the pavement quickly, and the right equipment and technique to place and compact asphalt on a grade.

My gravel driveway washes out every time it rains. Can you fix it?

Yes. A driveway that keeps washing out has a drainage problem, not a gravel problem. We rebuild the crown, add ditches, culverts, or water turnouts to get runoff off the driveway, and then rebuild the surface with stone that packs and stays.

Do you work on Lake Burton and Lake Rabun?

Yes. We're familiar with the narrow roads, steep lots, and tight access around the lakes, and we schedule equipment and trucks to fit them.

I don't live in Rabun County full time. Can you still do the work?
